Bösendorfer Camellia: a collector’s item

Let’s take a deep walk through the fields of camellia with the sound of the Bösendorfer and pick up a flower that will never fade away.

For thousands of years, the legacy of the camellia has been used for many reasons: satisfying the taste buds with fine teas, offering an intense fragrance, and providing unmatched visual beauty. Now, Bösendorfer brings sound to that list. This rarest piece doesn’t just justify the beauty of the flower – it portrays the culture, art, and music of Vienna in a single collector’s Item.

A rich piece of history: from imperial gardens to the grand stage

The camellia’s fascination is deep-rooted in Austrian history, blooming as a legacy of Empress Maria Theresa and Franz I. Stephan at the Schönbrunn Palace. To protect these exotic specimens from harsh winters, Vienna built the magnificent Palm House in 1882. It remains one of Europe’s grandest structures today.

By the 19th century, the camellia had captured the hearts of the aristocracy, eventually moving from royal gardens to the grand stage. In 1853, Giuseppe Verdi immortalized the flower in La traviata, creating one of the most successful operas in history.

Artisanal perfection: friendship, harmony, and beauty

Just as the legendary blossoms of the 1800s once graced the imperial courts of Europe, the Camellia Grand Piano stands today as a rare treasure for any collector. It is a striking fusion of history, luxury, and unparalleled craftsmanship. The real magic unfolds the moment you lift the lid. The underside serves as a sprawling canvas of premium maple, revealing a breathtaking arrangement of pink and red camellias that feels like a portal to a more opulent era.

This floral detailing is a masterclass in marquetry, where traditional woodworking is elevated to the level of high art. Artisans compose a vibrant botanical ‘painting’ using a hand-selected palette of natural veneers. By incorporating tulip, sycamore, ash, and walnut, they utilize the unique grain and natural hue of each wood to perfectly mirror the delicate texture of real petals and leaves.

What truly breathes life into this wooden garden is an ancient sand-shading technique. By carefully dipping tiny fragments of wood into hot sand to create scorched, shadowed edges, the craftsmen achieve a stunning three-dimensional quality. The result is a trompe l'oeil effect that makes the blossoms appear to curve and bloom directly off the maple surface. This immersive beauty even extends to the birdseye maple music stand, ensuring the pianist is surrounded by these intricate, everlasting flowers during every performance.

"To truly understand the Bösendorfer Camellia, you have to look past the petals and into the engineering that gives this instrument its ‘Viennese Soul.’"

The heart of the sound

Resonance case principle

Most pianos rely only on the soundboard, but a Bösendorfer is built like a violin. The entire body supports the sound. Craftsmen use 10 mm quarter-sawn spruce, specially grooved so it can be bent to the silhouette of the inner rim. This unique construction makes the whole instrument acoustically active, giving your music an incredible richness and brilliance.

A six-year journey with nature

The foundation of every grand is high-altitude spruce. Bösendorfer use over 80% spruce tone wood, more than any other maker in the world. This wood isn’t rushed; it is naturally air-dried for six years. The sun, wind, and seasons prepare the timber for its final purpose: to resonate with perfection.

The Vienna Concert (VC) experience

This is the sound for the next generation. Bösendorfer VC technology provides vivid colors and energetic dynamics, giving you a mechanical action that is both powerful and incredibly precise.

Handcrafted excellence

Total control

Whether you are playing a whisper-soft pianissimo or a powerful fortissimo, the action is designed for optimal control. Developed alongside artists and technicians, it is built to capture every tiny nuance of your performance.

Hand-spun bass strings

Bösendorfer doesn’t mass-produce their strings. Every bass string is spun by hand in the traditional Bösendorfer way, wrapping a steel core in copper to create that warm, deep bass sound.

The independent Capo d’Astro

Bösendorfer are the only manufacturer that uses a detachable, independent Capo d’Astro in the upper register. This allows us to make extremely precise adjustments, ensuring that the original, beautiful sound is preserved for generations.

Stability and Foundation

Iron frames are forged using traditional sand casting in Austria and left to rest outside for six months to release internal tension. For tuning stability, the open pinblock uses three layers of quarter-sawn maple glued cross-grained, settled on a base of red beech and finished with walnut.

Own a masterpiece in eternal bloom

Because of the immense level of detail required, only eighteen pieces were ever manufactured worldwide. We are honored to house the 9th of this exclusive series right here in Dubai.
